A Traditional Ruler in Ogbozinne community, Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Steven Nwatu has been murdered following alleged problem in the community to the setting up of a town union leadership.
Penpushing gathered that the problem had been on the community for over ten years and since enthronement of the royal father, and there had been no union, an issue that divided the community into two factions.
The community source said the matter caused the opposing group (those who wanted the union) to carry out a protest to the Enugu Government House before dragging the traditional ruler to court.
Penpushing further reports that, there are two different account of what led to the death of the monarch, as one said a group from his community attacked him when he came with police officers to effect an arrest.
The claim has it that the group reportedly disarmed the policemen, beat the traditional ruler, then stripped him naked and was later rushed to Park Lane Hospital Enugu, where he died.
Penpushing also gathered from another version that both factions were invited to the Government House on Monday but the traditional ruler allegedly tried to stop the meeting before he was beaten to death. However, following the killing, over 200 houses were reportedly razed by group loyal to the late ruler.
When contacted Enugu State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the murder adding that the state criminal intelligence and investigation department has commenced investigation. He said the investigation will unravel “the circumstances surrounding the incident as well as those involved.”
