Segun Showunmi in Ibadan
A former member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Dauda Adams said the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola deserved the National Honour that President Muhhamadu Buhari conferred on him.
Adam made this known at Press Center, Iyaganku, Ibadan while representing the guest lecturer, Rt. Honorable Akin Onigbinde during a program organised by the league of Veteran Journalists in commemoration of this year June 12 Anniversary’
Penpushing reports that the occasion marked the 25th years Anniversary of the annulled Presidential election by the then Military Head of States, General Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida which was won by the late business mogul, Chief Moshood Abiola
The event was in collaboration with the Agbaakin Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oloye Lekan Alabi who was also former Secretary General of MKO Abiola Dynamic Group.
The guest lecturer said the good works of the late politician would remain reference point in the history of the country having laid down his life for democracy which many politicians are now benefitting from.
" MKO Abiola has alleviate the suffering of the masses by establishing companies for the unemployed to work, he gave one million each to all the higher institutions in Nigeria, he gave money to Churches and Mosques, his achievements In Sports cannot be forgotten"
Adam who was a lawmaker in Oyo State during the 1993 Presidential election said himself and the guest lecturer Rt. Honorable Akin Onigbinde were part of the June 12, 1993 struggle when the then Military President General Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida dissolved both the States and Federal legislative arms
He faulted claims from some quarters that the GCFR confered on Abiola was politically motivated, stressing, "whatever anybody says about the GCFR that was conferred on Abiola is on his own. Some believe Abiola was not the Messiah Nigeria needs, Abiola will always be remembered, Abiola kinsman was there as the President and cannot do it, now Buhari made the declaration and they are against it, for me, it is a right step in the right direction"
In his own speech, a Professor of linguistics from the University of Ibadan, Professor Francis Egbokliare who reviewed a book written in the memory of the late MKO Abiola titled "June 12, less we forget", said Nigeria as a nation is still in chain, ‘because our dear country have not gain freedom as it has been speculated that Nigeria has gained independent since 1960’
"Everything in our national pledge has now turned to irony, June 12 represent the true nature of democracy because it was a day Nigerians voted for a candidate that was widely acceptable in all the regions in Nigeria"
The Professor who was a former Director of Distance Learning at the University of Ibadan noted some significant of June 12 in the history of Nigeria, adding that ‘ June 12 was the day Nigerians conducted the most free and fair election, June 12 was a subversion of the popular will of all Nigerians, it shows that Nigerians can have the right and acceptable person, June 12 is more than MKO Abiola as a person, it represent a stolen mandate of Nigerian citizen, it was a statement that we are not stupid"
He, however urged Nigerians to remain as one and continue to live in unity because the country has been in dissaray and we need to be united so that we can enjoy the struggle for democracy that Abiola laid his life for
